Faced with the prospect of a long-term decline in growth rates in mature markets, pharmaceutical companies are understandably drawn to emerging markets that hold out the promise of much faster growth. The “BRIC markets”—Brazil, Russia, India, and China—have been the focus of particular attention from the pharmaceutical industry. Multinational companies that want to rank among the leading players in the global pharmaceutical market of the future certainly cannot afford to ignore these expanding markets, but nor should they rush into these markets without an adequate understanding of the particular challenges they present.

The emerging markets certainly offer rapid sales growth, but this expansion is generally from a relatively low base, particularly when the very large populations of some of these markets are taken into account. Pharmaceutical companies entering the emerging markets must also be prepared for deficient healthcare infrastructures and logistical difficulties in reaching consumers in remote rural markets. Multinational companies must also recognize that governments in emerging markets are not always very supportive of large foreign companies’ efforts to establish a commanding position in their pharmaceutical markets. Relatively weak intellectual property protection and the risk of counterfeiting are further hazards of some emerging markets.

This webinar, presented by Decision Resources Analyst Neil Grubert, M.A., will examine the following topics across the four BRIC markets:

  • What are the key demographic and socioeconomic trends that will shape the future development of the pharmaceutical market in these countries?
  • How do the organization and funding of healthcare systems influence access to modern drugs?
  • What strategies have governments adopted with regard to pharmaceutical pricing, reimbursement, and cost containment?
  • What reforms are governments introducing to transform their national healthcare systems?
  • What are the most significant challenges for the international pharmaceutical industry in capitalizing on the potential of the BRIC markets?

Mr. Grubert will conduct a live Q & A session after the presentation.
