— A Pharmaview Competitive Assessment from Decision Resources

Last year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency granted Gaucher’s disease patients access, on a pre-approval basis, to two novel Phase III enzyme replacement therapies—Shire’s VPRIV (velaglucerase alfa) and Pfizer/Protalix’s Uplyso (taliglucerase alfa). This action was taken after a viral contamination at a Genzyme manufacturing facility resulted in global shortages of Genzyme’s Gaucher’s disease treatment, Cerezyme. Given their accelerated progression to market, both VPRIV and Uplyso were the subject of much discussion at last month’s Lysosomal Disease Network WORLD Symposium 2010.

In order to assess the impact of the data presented at this year’s conference, Decision Resources interviewed U.S. and European thought leaders to discuss whether the emerging therapies, including Genzyme’s promising Phase III oral substrate reduction therapy, eliglustat tartrate, will gain traction and succeed in the Gaucher’s disease drug market.

This session, presented by Pharmaview analyst Ben Duncan, will answer the following questions as they relate to data presented at the Lysosomal Disease Network conference:

  • What strategies will companies employ to gain a foothold within the Gaucher’s disease market?
  • What differentiators, if any, do surveyed physicians perceive in emerging agents for Gaucher’s disease?
  • What effects will the launch of the first competition to Cerezyme have on the Gaucher’s disease market?
  • Will the emerging agents for Gaucher’s disease achieve commercial success?

Mr. Duncan will conduct a live Q & A session after the presentation.
