Based on our Physician & Payer Forum report entitled Physician and Payer Attitudes Towards Effient, Brilinta and Other Novel Oral Antiplatelets for ACS and CHD, Decision Resources is offering an exclusive webinar entitled Will Effient, Brilinta and Other Novel Oral Antiplatelets Gain Widespread Physician and Payer Acceptance in ACS and CHD? Because this webinar will feature major report findings, it is ONLY available to purchasers of this report.

The use of oral antiplatelets, most notably Bristol-Myers Squibb/Sanofi-Aventis’s multi-blockbuster Plavix, is a key strategy for treating acute coronary syndrome (ACS)*. Following last year’s launch of Daiichi Sankyo/Eli Lilly’s Effient, antiplatelet treatment options for ACS have expanded and will continue to increase with the launch of other novel oral antiplatelets in the years ahead. However, although Plavix is accepted as a key antiplatelet treatment for ACS, it has some major drawbacks including hypo-responsiveness in some patients as well as a long onset and offset of action. Effient, too, has faced hurdles as its uptake has been hampered by problems with elevated bleeding rates. As a result, the need remains for new antithrombotic therapies that can reduce ischemic complications and mortality while not causing an increase in bleeding risk.
A series of emerging antiplatelet drugs are set to launch over the coming years for the treatment of ACS and the potential treatment of peripheral arterial disease, chronic stable coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke. With both companies seeking to capitalize on the limitations of existing treatments, AstraZeneca’s Brilinta and Novartis’s elinogrel are set to launch in 2011 and 2014, respectively. And Merck is set to launch vorapaxar in 2012 as an add-on therapy to the existing antiplatelet regimen.
Decision Resources surveyed 57 U.S. interventional cardiologists, 52 non-interventional cardiologists, 50 emergency room physicians and 20 managed care organization (MCO) pharmacy directors to assess their attitudes and expectations surrounding current and emerging antiplatelets for ACS.
This webinar, presented by Decision Resources Analyst Conor Walsh, Ph.D., will answer the following questions:
- What factors drive clinician’s choice of antiplatelet strategy and what patient share does each current brand enjoy, by indication and by specialty?
- How well are current brands differentiated in each specialty and which agent performs best across a range of attributes, according to clinicians? What are clinicians’ priorities for attributes of new brands? What patient-related factors limit the use of ADP receptor antagonists such as Plavix?
- What are clinicians’ attitudes toward emerging brands and what patient share can emerging antiplatelets expect, by indication? How will the launch of new brands impact prescribing of current brands and to what extent will they be used off-label?
- How are MCOs positioning antiplatelets on their formularies and how will they position novel agents? According to pharmacy & therapeutics’ committee members and MCO pharmacy directors, what drives hospital and MCO formulary inclusion decisions?
- What are hospitals’ policies on platelet function tests and pharmacogenomic tests? What are clinicians’ attitudes toward these tests and how will policies change over the next 12 months?
Dr. Walsh will conduct a live Q & A session after the presentation.
*Acute coronary syndrome (ACS), which is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in Western countries, is an umbrella term that encompasses acute ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) and unstable angina (UA).
