Based on our Physician & Payer Forum report entitled Physician and Payer Acceptance of Emerging Fixed-Dose Combination Inhalers for Asthma and COPD, Decision Resources is offering an exclusive webinar entitled Physician and Payer Perspectives on Emerging LABA/ICS Combinations in Asthma and COPD – Will New Treatments Differentiate Themselves from Advair and Symbicort? Because this webinar will feature major report findings, it is ONLY available to purchasers of this report.

Fixed-dose combination inhalers, which include long-acting beta2 agonist (LABA)/inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) combinations, are among the most widely prescribed agents for the treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Two LABA/ICS combinations, GlaxoSmithKline’s Advair and AstraZeneca’s Symbicort, currently dominate the asthma and COPD drug markets. In fact, Advair was the top-selling agent in both markets in 2008, with combined U.S. sales for these two indications totaling more than $4 billion.
However, the number of LABA/ICS combinations marketed in the United States is expected to increase from two to six by the end of 2013. As a result of these product launches in the next few years, established brands will see their market share threatened by emerging therapies offering new dosing schedules and devices—however, newcomers to the market must demonstrate to physicians that they offer unique value. Decision Resources surveyed 70 pulmonologists, 70 PCPs, and 21 managed care organization (MCO) pharmacy directors to assess the current use of fixed-dose combination inhalers in the United States and to gauge physicians’ expectations regarding the potential of emerging brands that will penetrate these markets.
This webinar, presented by Decision Resources Analyst Benjamin Guikema, Ph.D., will answer the following questions:
- What percentage of patients receiving treatment with a LABA and an ICS are treated with a fixed-dose combination versus separate inhalers? What are the primary reasons physicians prescribe fixed-dose combinations?
- What percentage of patients do physicians estimate will be prescribed emerging LABA/ICS combinations for asthma and for COPD? How much market share is at risk for Advair and Symbicort? What are Decision Resources’ additional insights on these survey-derived patient share estimates?
- To what extent do the safety records of LABA/ICS combinations or consumer preference drive tier placement? What tools do MCOs use to manage access to these brands?
- How receptive are physicians and MCO pharmacy directors to emerging fixed-dose LABA/ICS combinations? Which emerging LABA/ICS combinations do clinicians consider the most promising for asthma as well as for COPD?
- With regard to Dulera, Flutiform, Relovair and indacaterol/mometasone, which asthma or COPD patients are most likely to receive the combination inhaler? Does dosing frequency trump the anticipated cost when clinicians consider their willingness to prescribe each of these brands? What will each of these emerging brands need to achieve to secure preferred brand status? In various pricing scenarios, what tier placement do MCO pharmacy directors anticipate for each of these emerging combination inhalers?
Dr. Guikema will conduct a live Q & A session after the presentation.
