Over the past six years, the moderate-to-severe psoriasis market has been dominated by several TNF-alpha inhibitors with varied efficacy and safety profiles. However, the 2009 introduction of Centocor Ortho Biotech/Janssen-Cilag’s Stelara (ustekinumab), a first-in-class interleukin (IL) 12/23 inhibitor, to the U.S. and European markets, may pose a potential threat to this dominance. In the first head-to-head trial between two biologics, Stelara showed superior efficacy over Amgen/Pfizer/Takeda’s Enbrel, which has enjoyed the reputation of market leader since its approval for psoriasis in 2004. While Stelara boasts a more convenient dosing regimen, the lack of long-term safety and efficacy data may hinder its prospects for overshadowing the TNF dominance.

Decision Resources recently conducted a survey of 30 U.S. dermatologists in order to assess the uptake of Stelara in the months following its launch and to evaluate what physicians perceive to be incentives and deterrents in their prescribing of the drug.

This 15-minute analyst call, presented by Decision Resources Analyst Iva Holder, Ph.D., will answer the following questions:

  • Where does Stelara currently fit in the treatment algorithm for moderate-to-severe psoriasis?
  • Can Stelara become a first-line treatment for psoriasis and which biologics are at most risk of being replaced by it?
  • What are some of the major barriers to dermatologists’ prescribing of Stelara?
  • How are physicians’ prescribing practices influenced by the requirement for healthcare provider administration, infrequent dosing schedule, and Stelara’s head-to-head trial against Enbrel?

Dr. Holder will conduct a live Q & A session after the presentation.
