On June 22, Merck Serono announced it would no longer pursue global approval of cladribine, the company's novel oral immunosuppressant for the treatment of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RR-MS). Simultaneously, Merck Serono announced that it will withdraw the drug from the Australian and Russian markets, where oral cladribine is marketed under the brand name Movectro. A new clinical trial program would have been necessary to address the concerns of regulators in the United States and Europe regarding oral cladribine's risk/benefit profile, which led to the drug's rejection by these agencies earlier this year. The discontinuation of oral cladribine, once forecast to be the first oral disease-modifying drug to launch for the treatment of MS in the world's major markets, creates more opportunity for new MS therapies. In light of oral cladribine's demise, Decision Resources has updated its Pharmacor Multiple Sclerosis advisory service and market forecast.
This 15-minute analyst call, presented by Decision Resources Senior Analyst Jonathan W. Searles, will answer the following questions:
- What impact will oral cladribine's discontinuation have on the overall MS market?
- How will oral cladribine's discontinuation affect the uptake of current therapies, including Novartis/Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma's Gilenya (the first oral disease-modifying therapy to launch in the major markets) and emerging agents in the late-stage pipeline?
- In light of the absence of oral cladribine, what will the future MS treatment algorithm look like as a result of the shifting dynamics between the current mainstays of treatment and novel agents?
Mr. Searles will conduct a live Q & A session after the presentation.
