Roche/Genentech/Chugai’s Herceptin became the first targeted therapy to significantly extend the survival of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive advanced gastric cancer (GC) and, earlier this year, Herceptin gained European approval for this indication. In September, the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) announced that Herceptin combined with standard doublet chemotherapy would be recommended for the first-line treatment of HER2-positive metastatic GC. Although NICE had given a preliminary negative appraisal of Herceptin in July 2010 on the grounds that the drug’s cost effectiveness was unclear in GC, the agency has now concluded that Herceptin’s use in a narrower definition of highly HER2-positive GC patients is cost-effective and has recommended Herceptin’s use for the indication.

Due to the tight restrictions for eligibility of Herceptin in the United Kingdom, and the small number of eligible patients, sales of Herceptin in this country—approximately $6 million in 2019—will comprise only a small proportion of the overall forecasted sales of this agent in the world’s major pharmaceutical markets. Decision Resources forecasts that Herceptin will garner sales of $212 million in 2014 and $222 million in 2019.

This 15-minute analyst call, presented by Decision Resources Analyst Rachel Webster, D.Phil., will answer the following questions:

  • What factors led to NICE's preliminary negative appraisal for Herceptin in HER2-positive gastric cancer?
  • Why did NICE reverse its decision and recommend Herceptin for HER2-positive gastric cancer? How did new data for a subpopulation of patients influence this decision?
  • As compared to the United Kingdom, who will be eligible to receive Herceptin in the other four EU5 countries - France, Germany, Italy and Spain?
  • In the world’s major pharmaceutical markets, what is Decision Resources’ sales forecast through 2019 for Herceptin in gastric cancer?

Dr. Webster will conduct a live Q & A session after the presentation.
