The failure of Sanofi-Aventis’s Acomplia has created a significant void in the obesity market—no new weight-loss therapies have launched in the United States since Abbott’s Meridia entered the market in 1998 and Roche’s Xenical (orlistat) launched in 1999. Owing to modest efficacy, poor safety and tolerability profiles and unfavorable reimbursement, neither Meridia nor Xenical ever achieved blockbuster status. Meanwhile, sales of GlaxoSmithKline’s Alli—an over-the-counter half-dose formulation of orlistat which became available in the U.S. market in 2007—peaked within months of its launch.

However, at the 2009 annual meeting of The Obesity Society held last month, promising data were released for Arena Pharmaceuticals lorcaserin, Vivus’s Qnexa and Orexigen Therapeutics’ Contrave. These three novel obesity therapies have completed Phase III development and will soon be submitted for approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Following the conference, Decision Resources Director Donny Wong, Ph.D. surveyed 30 U.S. primary care physicians (PCPs) and interviewed key opinion leaders to determine their reaction to the news that emerged from the event.

In this 15-minute analyst call, Dr. Wong will answer the following questions:

  • What impact will lorcaserin, Qnexa and Contrave have on the obesity market if these agents receive regulatory approval?
  • Which obesity therapies are prescribers and thought leaders most excited about and what level of future prescribing do they anticipate for each drug?
  • What is Decision Resources’ market forecast for the obesity market through 2018?

Dr. Wong will conduct a live Q & A session after the presentation.
