During the recent Scientific Meeting of the American College of Rheumatology and in company-reported results, GlaxoSmithKline and Human Genome Sciences announced promising clinical trial data regarding Benlysta (belimumab) for the treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). In the trial, Benlysta was shown to reduce the symptoms of SLE and, as a result of its efficacy, GlaxoSmithKline and Human Genome Sciences announced that they will file for regulatory approval of the drug in both the United States and Europe in 2010. If approved, Benlysta could become the first new drug approved for systemic lupus erythematosus in 50 years.
Following the conference, Decision Resources Analyst Dancella Fernandes, Ph.D., surveyed 30 U.S. rheumatologists to determine their reaction to the news that emerged from the event. Additionally, as a result of the pending submission for regulatory approval of Benlysta, Decision Resources will update its Systemic Lupus Erythematosus report.
In this 15-minute analyst call, Dr. Fernandes will answer the following questions:
- What impact will Benlysta have on the SLE market if the agent receives regulatory approval? If approved, how do surveyed rheumatologists expect to use Benlysta and for which patient segments do they expect to prescribe it?
- How will the scope of Benlysta’s likely label indication shape its use in the SLE market? What will be the most significant drivers of Benlysta’s use and what do surveyed experts think could be potential barriers to its uptake?
- What are Decision Resources’ expectations for Benlysta’s commercial success?
Dr. Fernandes will conduct a live Q & A session after the presentation.
