Introduction:

Last Updated 25 June 2010
Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) rates are increasing, and because RCC treatment is dominated by targeted agents, this market is highly lucrative. Targeted agents in development, such as Pfizer’s axitinib and GlaxoSmithKline’s pazopanib (Votrient/Patorma, formerly Armala), have demonstrated clinical benefits, and we anticipate the launch of several emerging therapies during our 2008-2018 forecast period. However, a large unmet need to improve the prognosis of RCC patients still remains, owing to poor survival rates of patients who have metastatic disease.

Questions Answered in This Report:

  *   We forecast that several emerging therapies will launch for treatment of RCC. Which emerging therapies are most likely to compete successfully with current market leaders? Are they all from the same class? How will they change current medical practice?

  *   We forecast sustained annual growth in the RCC market during our study period. What factors are driving RCC market growth? What factors will constrain market growth?

  *   Currently, no adjuvant therapies are available for treatment of stages I-III RCC. Will targeted therapies or emerging agents prove to be successful in this setting?

  *   Several immunotherapies are in development for RCC. What do physicians think about the potential of immunotherapies in RCC? Will any of these agents succeed in penetrating the RCC market?

Scope:

Markets covered: United States, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom, Japan.

Primary research: 31 country-specific interviews with key thought leaders.

Epidemiology: Incident cases and diagnosed prevalent cases of stage I-IV disease.

Population segments in market forecast: Adjuvant intermediate- and high-risk; stage IV (advanced nonmetastatic and metastatic) first-line, second-line (after failure of first-line treatment in stage IV), and third-line (after failure of second-line treatment in stage IV).

Alternative market scenarios: (1) Combinations of targeted therapies are shown to be better than monotherapy; (2) multikinase inhibitors succeed in the adjuvant setting.
