Introduction:

Last Updated 24 May 2010
Hypertension is a chronic disease requiring treatment with blood-pressure-lowering agents to prevent the development of cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular disease, and end-organ damage. Because of the availability of efficacious and often generically available drugs, uptake of novel, more-expensive drugs for hypertension is slow. Commercial opportunity lies in the development of agents that reduce patients’ pill burden, have a beneficial effect on outcomes, are less frequently administered, and lower blood pressure more effectively than current agents.

Questions Answered in This Report:

  *

Recent Events: The first calcium-channel blocker (CCB)/angiotensin II receptor antagonist (AIIRA)/diuretic fixed-dose combination agent (FDC) has been approved. How do experts view triple-pill combinations? What market potential does this agent have?

Development of Gilead’s darusentan, an endothelin receptor antagonist, was terminated after it failed to meet its primary end point in the DORADO-AC Phase III clinical trial. What emerging therapies with novel mechanisms of action remain in development for the treatment of hypertension? Which emerging agents are experts most excited about?

  *   By the midyear of our study period, several novel FDCs of antihypertensive agents, including AIIRA/CCB FDCs and CCB/RAAS inhibitor/diuretic FDCs, will reach the market. How will these agents affect sales of monotherapy agents? What competitive challenges will these novel FDCs face in the treatment of hypertension?

  *   Generic competition will increasingly dominate the hypertension market throughout our study period. How will emerging agents compete in a highly genericized market? How will emerging agents in classes with generics available fare? Which agents will suffer most from generic drug competition?

  *   Upon its launch in 2011, Takeda’s azilsartan will be the eighth AIIRA to market. How do experts view this AIIRA? What patient share will azilsartan capture? What competition will it face?
